TRANSPORT FARES REMAIN UNCHANGED; BUT SOME DRIVERS HAVE INCREASED FARES

Checks by Vicky News shows that some commercial Drivers in Accra have increased  transport fare even though the Ghana Road Transport Coordinating Council (GRTCC) has appealed to drivers to be patient as the council looks at an upward review of transport fares. While some are taking their old prices , other are taking advantage of hikes in fuel to cheat passengers. Petroleum products price increased from 18 to 27 percent January 4. The increase was occasioned by the passage of the Energy Sector Levy (ESL) by Parliament in December 2015 and Transport unions in the country met with officials of the Ministry of Transport on Thursday in an attempt to review transport fares following the increment of fuel prices.
The announcement of an upward review in transport fares was subsequently rescheduled in anticipation of an increase in road tolls. However, some commercial drivers have already increased their fares by adding 20 persewaas to the fares. Drivers should take note that the Ghana Private Road Transport Union (GPRTU) had announced plans to increase transport fares following the increase but as at yet, prices remain the same.
