WORLD CANCER DAY-ROLE OF THE FIRST LADY IN THE FIGHT AGAINST CANCER

By Victoria Ahadzie

Ghana today joins the rest of the world to mark World Cancer Day. The day is part of the World Cancer campaign, which responds to the chapter of Paris adopted at the World Summit Against cancer for the New Millennium on February 4, 2000.

It called for a strong alliance between researchers, healthcare professionals, patients, governments, industry partners and the media to fight cancer.

On this day businesses, government and non-profit organizations work together to help the general public learn more about the different types of cancer, how to watch for it, treatments and preventive measures.

Ghana’s First Lady and President of the Organization of African First Ladies Against HIV (OAFLA) MrsLordinaMahama in her own way is creating awareness of breast and cervical cancers. Being so much concerned about the well-being of Ghanaians, the First Lady, through the Ghana Chapter of OAFLA and the Ghana Aids Commission has for the past years organized series of health screening across the country.

Some of the areas, which has benefited from the health screening include Gbawe, Kasoa, Adabraka, Ada, some parts of BrongAhafo, Western, Central and Northern Regions.  Beneficiaries screened for breast and cervical cancers, syphilis, HIV and other reproductive diseases.

Many women have little information and knowledge about breast and cervical cancer whiles others who have information are too busy with work and family to take advantage of health services available to them. In view of this the First Lady decided to bring health screening to the doorstep of the people.

At separate events the First Lady entreated the gathering to pay more attention to their health by visiting the hospital for regular check up. “Early detection leads to early treatment” she noted. According to her cancer is a leading cause of death but when detected early it is managed and prevented from getting to the advanced stage.

Nana LordinaMahama also advised men to be interested in the health of their wives by helping them to examine their breasts.

She believes women form the majority of the country population and also the backbone of every family hence they need to be healthy at all times.

This year’s World Cancer Day is taking place under the tagline “We can, I can”. Everyone as collective or individual can do their part to reduce the global burden of cancer.

There are several cancers, which affect different parts of our body. Just as cancer affects everyone in different ways all have the power to take various actions to reduce the impact that cancer has on individuals, families and communities.

As we celebrate World Cancer Day, I would commend the First Lady of Ghana MrsLordina Mahama for her contribution towards the awareness creation about the disease and also for the provision of free health screening. Ghanaians say God bless you.

So what can you do to support the fight against cancer? Make a pledge and take action. Whatever you choose to do “We can, I can makes a difference to the fight against cancer.
