SUPREME COURT SET MAY 26 TO DELIVER JUDGEMENT ON GBA SUIT

The Ghana Supreme Court has set the 26th of May to deliver its judgment on the suit filed by the  Ghana Bar Association, GBA,  challenging the procedure  for the  appointment of two Supreme Court justices by the president.

The Association is seeking an interpretation of the Constitutional provision  which states that Supreme Court Justices shall be appointed by the  President acting on the advice of the Judicial Council.

Two  former Presidents of the GBA , Nene Amegatse and Frank Bechem, filed the writ at the Supreme Court  to nullify the nomination and subsequent confirmation of some two Supreme Court Justices who  were appointed by President Mahama last year citing a breach of some vital procedures in their appointment and confirmation.

A journalist Richard Sky and a lawyer, Kwasi Danso have also filed similar suits  which has since been consolidated with that of the GBA. Their suit is challenging the appointment of  a Chairman for  the Electoral Commission and want the court to interpret certain provisions of the 1992 Constitution in relation to it.
